Behavior modification is the process by which behavior is modified (or changed) based on Learning Theory. There are a number of humane methods that can be used to achieve the desired change ranging from primary reinforcers, secondary reinforcers, flooding, operant conditioning, positive reinforcement and *negative reinforcement to name a few of the basics. I never use any method that would cause physical, emotional or psychological damage to the animal. More articles on behavior modification can be found in the article section of my website. (*An example of negative reinforcement is leash training. Giving the dog a gentle pull on the leash and releasing the pressure the instant the dog moves forward is an example of negative reinforcement. The dog learns that by performing a particular behavior, moving forward, he can stop an opposing behavior, the pull of the leash. Although the name would imply otherwise, the method is neither a harmful experience nor a form of punishment. However, as with any training method, it can be incorrectly or abusively executed which is why it is so important to enlist the help of an experienced trainer.)
